Potential for Southern Laos

Southern Laos is the least known region of Laos, which is said to be the last unexplored region in Southeast Asia, to Japanese people. However, being sandwiched between the large markets of Thailand and Vietnam, Southern Laos is recognized as a "production center of Southeast Asia," and many foreign companies from neighboring Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and France have established operations in the region. In addition, with the ASEAN Economic Integration Plan that began in 2015, it is expected that many more companies will move into the region as a production base as resources become easier to come and go. Southern Laos is a land of great potential for businesses that take advantage of its natural features, such as its many remaining forests and large-scale upland and lowland agriculture. Among these, agriculture is the only business sector in Southeast Asia that the government recommends to foreign companies. In addition, an increasing number of Japanese companies are relocating some of their factories from Thailand and China to conduct industrial operations.
